Mechanical seals, or packing, prevent leakage while joining systems or mechanisms together. They can also maintain pressure or prevent contamination.
Gaskets
Gaskets are a type of seal that fills the space between two surfaces, preventing leakage, and can often fill the gap between two mating surfaces that have minor irregularities. Gaskets are commonly made from gasket paper, rubber, silicone, metal, cork, felt, neoprene, nitrile rubber, fiberglass, or a plastic polymer. Most gaskets are made from a product that naturally fills in extra space, but some gaskets require an application of sealant to function properly.
